Maharaja Hari Singh Palace in Gulmarg was originally built as a royal summer retreat and is now operated as a hotel and historical site. It was constructed in the 20th century by Hari Singh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Features and history Architecture: The palace showcases a blend of Kashmiri and colonial architectural styles. Its exterior is reminiscent of European architecture and features an internal portico and glass windows. Royal use: It was a favorite retreat for European visitors during the winter. Due to the area's heavy snowfall, the palace was constructed with wooden walls and floors for effective insulation. The original palace included a stable for the royal horses. Current status: Today, the palace is open to the public and is also used as a hotel. Visitors can explore the historical structure and its magnificent interiors.

I visited the Maharaja Hari Singh Palace in Gulmarg, and it was an incredible experience. The palace is a stunning blend of Kashmiri, Mughal, and European architectural styles, with intricate woodwork and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The wood is made from walnut trees' wood. What struck me was the unique history of the palace. The downstairs area is actually a horse stable, which later served as a prison. It's fascinating to see how the space was utilized in different ways throughout history. I visited in the late afternoon, and the light was perfect for capturing the palace's beauty. However, the guide said that the downstairs area gets closed off after 4:30pm, so it's best to visit earlier in the day if you want to explore that part thoroughly. Overall, the palace is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, and the royal heritage of Kashmir. The views from the upper floors are stunning, and the palace's intricate details are a testament to the craftsmanship of the region. Highly recommended!"
