The history of the Machail Mata temple in Kishtwar is rooted in local legend, with lore stating that the goddess Chandi self-manifested in the village centuries ago, later discovered by a shepherd. The shrine's significance was further cemented in the 19th century when General Zorawar Singh Kahluria sought and received blessings from the goddess, leading to his successful conquest of Ladakh in 1834,

I visited Machail Mata Temple with my brother in early September, and it was an amazing experience. The journey there was beautiful, with breathtaking mountain views and stunning nature everywhere we looked. The temple itself had a peaceful atmosphere, and we loved learning about the local culture. Overall, we really enjoyed our time and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a spiritual retreat in a beautiful setting If you planning any trip then I highly recommend to you to visit there.

Machail Mata Sthaan as the shrine is popularly known, has landscapes of unblemished beauty with hills, glaciers and tributaries of the Chenab River (Chadrabhaga). Paddar valley, nearby is famous for its world-famous sapphire mines, and is a cool place for hiking, cannoning and holy hot springs.

You will definitely fall in love with this place once you visit, and you’ll want to return again and again. People here have immense love and faith in Maa Chandi. You can reach this destination either by helicopter or by trekking on foot. The entire route is one of the most scenic places in India and is best experienced on foot, unless trekking is not an option for you. The road is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in two years. Watch my vlogs on Machail Yatra and other videos related to Chandi Mata's history and travel guides to Machail on my YouTube channel, HIMALAYAN BACKPACKER. Jai Mata Di 🙏🕉️🧡
