a month agoHidden within the heart of Tangmarg, just a few kilometers before Gulmarg, lies one of the most enchanting natural wonders of Kashmir — the Drung Waterfall (also known as the Drang Waterfall). It is not just a stream of water cascading down the rocky cliffs, but a breathtaking display of nature’s artistry, where mountains, pine forests, and rushing water unite to create an unforgettable experience. The beauty of Drung lies in its ever-changing charm — vibrant and refreshing in summer, magical and frozen in winter. As you approach the site, the sound of the waterfall greets you before your eyes behold it. The rushing water echoes through the valley, blending with the cool mountain breeze and the scent of pine. The moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by majestic cliffs, crystal-clear streams, and lush greenery. The setting feels like something out of a dream — untouched, pure, and deeply peaceful. During the summer months, the Drung Waterfall gushes with full force, its white spray glistening in the sunlight. The nearby rocks get covered with moss and flowers, and small streams form natural pools where visitors often dip their feet. The area becomes alive with families, photographers, and travelers enjoying picnics and tea from the nearby stalls. The gentle temperature and the fresh air make it a perfect escape from the heat of the plains, a natural paradise where time slows down. But it is during winter that Drung turns truly magical. As the temperature drops, the waterfall freezes completely, creating a stunning wall of ice that shimmers in shades of blue and white. The icicles hang like chandeliers from the cliffs, and the entire valley looks like a frozen fairyland. Visitors from all over Kashmir — and beyond — come to witness this rare sight. The sound of dripping water beneath layers of ice and the crunch of snow underfoot make it an experience that feels almost otherworldly. The Drung Waterfall area is also rich in cultural and natural significance. Tangmarg, the nearby town, has long been a gateway to Gulmarg, and the surrounding hills are dotted with small villages, traditional homes, and apple orchards. The locals are friendly and welcoming, often offering a cup of Kashmiri kehwa or snacks to visitors. Small cafés and stalls around the site serve hot tea, corn, and local delicacies — simple pleasures that make the experience even more heartwarming. The viewpoints near the waterfall are perfectly placed to give panoramic glimpses of the surrounding mountains and forests. If you visit during early morning or late evening, the changing light makes the scene even more mesmerizing — golden sunlight hitting the icy walls or mist floating gently through the valley. Photographers find it an absolute delight, and even a casual visitor can’t resist capturing dozens of pictures. However, the area does face a few challenges. During the tourist rush, crowding and littering can slightly spoil the pristine beauty of the place. Visitors and local authorities could work together to maintain cleanliness so that the purity of this natural gem remains untouched. A bit more organized management, proper pathways, and safety barriers would also enhance the visitor experience. Still, despite these minor issues, Drung Waterfall remains one of Kashmir’s most captivating destinations — a place that feels alive, pure, and soulful. It is a testament to the valley’s unmatched natural beauty, offering something new in every season. Whether you visit for its thundering summer flow or its frozen winter glory, Drung never fails to leave an impression that stays with you long after you’ve left. If you’re traveling to Gulmarg, a stop at Drung Waterfall is an absolute must. It’s not just a sightseeing spot; it’s a spiritual encounter with nature — where silence speaks, water dances, and ice glows with life. ⭐ Overall Rating: 4.9/5 Natural Beauty: 5/5 Accessibility: 4.5/5 Cleanliness: 4/5 Experience (Summer & Winter): 5/5 Local Hospitality: 4.7/5 Photography Spot: 5/5

4 weeks agoI’ve visited Drung Waterfall twice over the past two years, and it’s always such a refreshing experience. The view is absolutely beautiful — the frozen waterfall and the cool breeze make it a perfect spot to just sit and relax for a while. I had a cup of chai from a small vendor nearby, and he was really nice and friendly — it just added to the whole vibe of the place. This time, instead of taking the ATV ride (which was quite pricey), I decided to walk uphill from the waterfall point. The effort was totally worth it! The upper plain ground is incredibly scenic with open views and a touch of forest beauty all around. It’s one of those places where you can truly enjoy nature, unwind, and take in the peaceful surroundings. Definitely a must-visit spot if you’re in the area.
