Gharana Wetlands is a captivating tourist attraction nestled in the scenic region near Bhadyal Qazian. Renowned as the second highest concentration spot for winter migratory birds in India, this sanctuary offers bird watchers and photographers an extraordinary experience close to the international border. Home to around 65 species including bar-headed geese, gadwals, and white-breasted ibis, the wetlands come alive especially from December to February. Visitors frequently highlight the magic of early mornings between 9am and 11am when the fog lifts, revealing a vibrant display of avian life. The peaceful environment, free access, and dedicated parking make it an ideal destination for nature lovers and families looking to enjoy a serene picnic spot. Efforts by the local forest department aim to preserve this unique ecosystem, ensuring Gharana remains a cherished gem in the Jammu region.

3 months agoVisited during December as well as February of 2023 and 2024 respectively. Had a wonderful time there bird watching. Birds arrive in the morning between 7-10 AM and then settle in the wetland. A wonderful place for bird enthusiasts. Lot of varieties here, from Indian roller to western wagtail and so on. Gharana wetland has alot of potential, however, government seems to ignore it. However, there may be some steps that administration is going to take to bring it on map and actually do something so as to protect the ecology for a sensitive area but at the same time makes it worthy of being visited.

11 months agoThis is the second highest concentration of winter migratory birds that I have ever seen in India, 2nd only to Bharatpur Keoladeo bird sanctuary. It is very close to the international border and Suchetgarh border crossing is nearby. It is a must go destination for bird watchers and photographers. The J&K forest department is developing this place as a tourist attraction. I hope that they follow the lead of Bharatpur sanctuary and prevent visitors from littering and destroying this mini paradise of Jammu region. The best time to visit is from December to February, especially after some rain showers. Best time of the day would be from 9am to 11am when the fog has lifted. No tickets required. Ideal for picnics. Dedicated car park is available.
