8 months agoThe Sukrala Mata Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to the Goddess Mal Devi, considered a reincarnation of Sharda Devi. It is located on a hillock in Sukrala village, near Najot village, in Billawar town of the Kathua district in the Jammu division. The temple is believed to have been initially built by Madho Singh, an exiled prince of Chamba (Himachal Pradesh), and later renovated and expanded. The presiding deity, Mal Devi, is represented by a stone slab seated on a brass lion with a silver-mounted head. An image of Mahishasur Murdini is also present. Thousands of devotees visit the temple throughout the year, with numbers increasing significantly during the Navratra festivals. The shrine stands at a height of 3,500 feet, offering picturesque views of the surrounding lush green forests and hills. Devotees need to climb a number of stairs to reach the sanctum. It is believed that Maa Sukrala is very kind and generous and fulfills all the wishes of devotees who pray to her with a pure heart. We were fortunate to have visited the shrine in May 2024. It was not very crowded, and we had a good time seeing the temple and having Darshana of the Mata. The priest was very nice and friendly. We were fortunate to have Prasad in the form of Langar there, it was an unexplainable experience. Parking is available near the temple entrance. Wheelchair accessibility to the temple appears limited due to the stairs. Shops near the temple sell religious items and Prasad for devotees. The journey to the temple itself is very adventurous and amazing, making it a must-see temple in Kathua.
